Kate is the team player who dyed her hair green to win a test. She was The Mole's sixth victim.
ABC: Terrific to have you on our chat
tonight, Kate!
Kate: Hi there! Glad to be here!
Megs: Did Charlie's comments make you cry?
Kate: I
was able to ignore Charlie's comments for most of the time I was on the show.
His strategy was to distract me, and I was able to ignore him most of the time.
We were under stress and at the end, as this last episode showed; I thought he
was going a little bit overboard.
ABC: But you never actually
cried.
Kate: No, I got choked up a little bit because at that
point, knowing I wasn't going to win and I wasn't the Mole, it was a
disappointment to me. We have yet to find out what the answer is, and I hope
that he's neither the winner nor the Mole.
MoLeSpY: Kate, did you
intentionally sabotage any of the missions so that people would think you were
the Mole?
Kate: Well, since I'm a lot older than most of the
players (I've got 20 years on Jennifer), I didn't have to do any sabotaging - it
was all I could do to keep up (my running ability leaves a lot to be desired)! I
was just trying to play the game. Also, a lot of people don't realize that
earlier in the show I had bronchitis, and it took me a while to get on
medication. So, initially when I had to do the parachute jump, and then on the
boat and climbing hills, I got winded easily. I was never a good runner, but
that's no excuse.
LokaLoka: Were you nervous about all the things
you had to do in the dice game, especially posing naked?
Kate:
(laughing) Well, first of all, it's a family show, and I kept that in mind. They
treated us very well. When I was asked to do that, I had faith it would stay a
family show. I was never 'naked'; I was draped, and there was a female
videographer, the painter, and myself. I was behind the screen to change, and I
was probably more covered than at the beach. It was fun to do. I wasn't nervous.
And I wanted that exemption - it was important to stay in the game.
ABC: And you were such a good sport about that, including having
your hair dyed green.
Kate: Well, my hair is still a problem!
It's not green, but changed many colors. The lady who did it in Spain totally
stripped it and dyed it, so it's not a quick fix, and I'm working to get it to
my original colors. I'm trying new colors to see what image I can be. I'm now a
blonde. Shaving it might have been easier; that may be my next option.
American Girl: How does it feel to be on TV?
Kate:
Oh, it's great! But very strange. The first time I saw a promo for it months
ago; I shot up and said, "Oh, my word, that's what I look like!" And it wasn't
pleasant! Now that I'm seeing it, I can see how it's edited. There was 100 hours
of filming for every hour you see. You can't put that much into an hour. So it
looks different than the experience, but the game is fantastic.
Forgetaboutit: Last night on the show someone got in trouble over
violating the rules about being sequestered. Can you tell us about it?
Kate: Right, because that was a very strict rule that once you
were put in, you stay in. I don't know if they got claustrophobia finally, but I
found out last night about Jim and Steve's pact. I don't know why they got
Katherine in on it; only time will tell. Charlie and I were good - we stayed in
our rooms! The old folks needed some rest! If you brought your own reading
material, you could read, but I'm not much of a reader. I took the time off to
rest. I had had bronchitis and didn't want a relapse. The producer said next
time they would stress physical fitness better.
Merced: Were you
somewhat glad when you were executed, so you could return to your family?
Kate: Oh, wow, that's a tough question! No, I wasn't glad,
because I had come that close to winning. But I wanted to get home like everyone
else. I knew it wouldn't have been much longer, but I came home as fast as I
could.
Melissa: I just want to say that I hope to have your
spunk, confidence, and class when I am your age. You are an impressive
individual.
Kate: How sweet! That is so sweet. I appreciate the
comment. I enjoyed it very much. I'm a grandmother of today.
GrandMaster: What was your interaction with Anderson? Did he have
to ride along in the vans when you were going places?
Kate:
Sometimes he would ride with us to get sound bites or a first hand view of
conflicts, but sometimes he rode with the production crew. He would also eat
most meals with us, so we had limited interaction with him. When we saw
Anderson, we knew we had something to do. He spelled trouble.
Zdeetro: Whose fault do you think it was when you guys lost the
challenge when you were protecting the bowl?
Kate: Wow...that's a
very interesting situation. Steve was all by himself protecting a utility box.
If he were the Mole, he could have been dropped off there and he would have been
let by. Charlie did not follow my light at all, and I pointed out at least where
one of them was. Jim was in the position to guard the one entrance, and then
Kathryn - who appears to be the one to let the guy through - isn't a good shot.
It took her a minute to undo the safety, so we lost the challenge.
MoLeFaN: Which mission was the most challenging?
Kate: Anything to do with running! As I pointed out, I am not the
world's best runner. Kathryn runs marathons. Afi is great at running; she had to
pull me up the hill. The last thing I had to do was the carriage ride. I was so
relieved once I got on there. I just have never been able to run well, so I
didn't look forward to that.
ABC: What about fighting the bull?
Kate: Well, that...when they announced what we were going to do,
we all took a number, and I got 3, and I didn't think much about it. Charlie was
ahead of me, and he came back all bloody, and then it was my turn. At this point
I realized this isn't such a good idea, and then I was committed. I just had my
dignity bruised.
Babs: When you left yesterday, and you said that
you now know who the Mole is, what is the reason you say that? What were the
reasons for you to pick the first person as your first guess as the mole?
Kate: I actually wound up picking the right person for the first
couple of episodes, but the Mole was so clever and good, they changed their
strategy.
Mishi: How skewed is the
editing? Are we seeing a true picture so we have a chance at picking up on the
clues?
Kate: Yes, you really are. In fact, you are seeing clues
we didn't see. A lot of the tasks we have to do, we are in different places than
the other players, so we can't see everyone at all times. If you aren't with the
Mole, you can't see what they are doing when you are not with them. You are
missing everything that builds up the tension because there is just so much you
can put in an hour show.
Kelloshy: Kate, just wanted to tell you
that the entire Cincinnati area is very proud of the way you played the game!
Did Charlie ever apologize to you for his rude, uncalled-for remarks? You
certainly didn't deserve to be treated that way.
Kate:He got
caught up in the game, if not in the show. He'd be a different personality. I'm
hopeful in another context we would have a great time together.
I Am Is Goalie: Who were
your friends at the game?
Kate: All of them! Manuel and Afi
weren't on long enough to get to know them well. Since then, I have. In the
beginning we were focused on what we were doing. Wendy, I got to know a little
more. Jennifer, I got to know the best, but everyone was concentrating on the
game, and we thought that would be a bond we would all have, and we will
probably be in touch for a very long time.
ABC: That's good to
know, especially given where it's a game where you can't trust people.
Kate: Right. It was totally a game of deception, and that was fun
at the reunion - we didn't have to be deceptive anymore. Even the Mole is a very
nice person. In any other situation, you'd love this person.

Dude: I was wondering how do you think Kathryn will do against the three
guys. I hope she wins the money.
Kate: I hope she wins the money
too! (laugh) She will do well. Katherine is a formidable force. She's smaller
than me, but smarter. You can tell how smart she is. She's cute, good-looking,
can charm them; she can handle her own, I have no doubt.
sgeM:
Did you feel bad when you decided to switch with Jen for the family member and
you two switched wrong?
Kate: I did. I felt badly. I went over to
her, as you probably saw, but she was so upset she didn't want to talk to me,
but Jennifer is a great person, and she told me she never had any animosity. I was worried
for nothing. She is a sweet person and quickly forgave me.
Jim
Charlie720: Would you ever visit the places where the show took place again?
Kate: Oh, I would love to, but I couldn't afford it! If I had won
the money I could have. They were gorgeous sites, first-class everything - it
was an expensive trip. If someone else were to foot the bill, I would love to go
back.
WrongWay: Why didn't you say anything when you were on the
boat about the brochure?
Kate: There was a lot of debris on the
boat, and we had a translator stowed on the boat (the guy running the boat
didn't speak English). In the hull was all kinds of stuff, and the translator
kept saying, "That belongs to the Captain," and there was a crumpled up brochure
with the name of the city on it. I wasn't intentionally ignoring it - it looked
like garbage. If we were in communication with the people in the van, we'd have
figured it out a lot sooner. They didn't say they had maps.
Its
Charlie: Did you have a real strategy coming into the game?
Kate: Well...I just wanted to do the best I could. When I found
out I wasn't going to be the Mole - I was hoping they would pick me, but they
didn't - then I wanted to play as best I could and get as far as I could. I
wanted to try and get along with everyone, and build the pot up as much as
possible, in hopes that maybe I would win.
Molefanman: Would you
do it all over again if you could?
Kate: Absolutely, in a
heartbeat. Where do I sign up?
StarDust: Did the locals know that
this show was being filmed in their area? What were they like?
Kate: We had no contact with the locals other than to smile. We
tried to ask for directions, but we didn't speak the language. Jim was good with
the languages. Mostly they would look at us, bewildered. They were good to us;
they put up with a lot. I'm sure they are still wondering what ran through their
village - most of these were small towns.
Angimp: I am curious as
to how long the taping of the show actually lasted. We are led to believe that
you are going day-to-day. Were you? Or were there days in between your
tests/assignments?
Kate: I haven't looked at the editing that
closely, but roughly we were gone a month. And that took place last fall. I
didn't take exact notes. Almost no day did something not happen - once we were
rained out, but we were changing locations virtually every day.
Rachel: Why do you think that Anderson gave you the chances of
two exemptions?
Kate: I think (I know) that was luck of the draw.
The players always pick who does what activity, and Anderson has nothing to do
with that. He doesn't say exactly what you are doing. Like when we did the
Cartier watch, we want someone with good eyes. We don't know the activity when
we volunteer. I was by coincidence involved with two that involved exemptions;
it was just the way it was predesigned. When I was told about the opportunity
for a second exemption, I said I don't think they are going to like this!
Kris Nates Mom: Who decided on where everyone was going to be in
the fortress test?
Kate: We decided as a team, but there was some
dissention. Katherine and Charlie had one idea, Steve and Jim had another, and
it turns out we set it up as Steve and Jim wanted it, and Katherine and Charlie
went along but weren't comfortable. I thought they would have the best expertise
to protect us; I remained neutral. They put me up on the roof to get rid of me.
It was cold up there - gale force winds came up and it was freezing! It was
challenging, but fun.
Kath Is Da Mole: Kate, out of the nine
other players, who would you most likely become friends with outside of the
show?
Kate: Oh...that's hard to tell at this time because we have
only had limited time to get with each other outside the game. I would hope I would
stay friends with all of them.
Gord Of The Fries:
Did you ever get back your belongings from the repack?
Kate:
Katherine did mine and she did an excellent job. All I lost was a bottle of
Listerine and I was able to get that replaced. I had everything with me and I
never had a problem. I think some of the others weren't as lucky. I think Steven
was missing a shoe. Charlie did that to him.
Mark: Were there any
restrictions on what you could say on the phone to the Smart team during the
Smart, Stupid, and Resourceful test?
Kate: There wasn't a
restriction; it was how we wanted to play it. If we let them arrive we would
have gotten the 40 grand, but Charlie and I would have to sleep outside. We were
betting that they wouldn't make it there. As far as the Smart team, if we kept
them away we would double the pot, and as time went on we were losing hope that
the Resourceful team wouldn't make it and we wouldn't get any money, so we
decided to get at least one team there and were willing to sleep outside and get
the extra money. We had to guess where the others were. We had no maps and we
were guessing. It came down to the wire, and we were happy they made it.
GQ-Sexy: Which city was your favorite that you had the most fun
in?
Kate: Ooohhhh...I loved them all. Monaco is wonderful, and I
was on the boat ride. Being on the Mediterranean, having helicopters chase
you...it was an exciting event. We had all our energy. Some of the productions,
like last night, with the fortress, the productions in the games were so
elaborate, you couldn't help but have fun. It was an incredible experience.
Mole Seeker: Has it been hard to keep the identity of the Mole a
secret?
Kate: Well, since I found out for sure only a short time
ago, no. Once you have played the game you learn to keep some pockets of
information separate. I kept that off to the side and made sure I don't infer if
it's a male or a female. I don't say him or her - it could be any of them. It's
either a lawyer or policeman.
MavsNBA: You were a great sport. I
just wanted to say thanks for making it fun for us!
Kate: Oh,
thank you. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was an absolute blast.
ABC: We're just about out of time, Kate. Do you have anything
you'd like to close with?
Kate: I appreciate you all logging in.
I appreciate the interest in the show; it's been building each week. I think more and more people are hearing
about it, and how different it is from other reality shows. There are layers to
the game, and I hope they continue with it.
