Challenge When It Rains It Really Pours
Location: Doum Swamp
The Survivors are each placed directly underneath a bucket filled with water. The bucket is connected to the Survivor's wrists by a rope just above their head. If a Survivor moves his or her hand, the bucket will tip over and shower the person with water. The last Survivor to remain dry with their hand held above their head wins.

On night 21, at yet another intense Tribal Council, Clarence Black, the 24-year-old High School Basketball Coach from Detroit, Michigan, was voted out of the newly merged Moto Maji tribe. Earlier, Clarence proved his strength as a competitor, displaying his endurance and lasting just under seven hours at the Immunity Challenge, only to lose to Teresa Cooper. Clarence, a former member of the original Boran tribe, was the seventh person to be voted out of SURVIVOR AFRICA, proving that old tribal lines are no longer as important as they once were.
Upon his exit from Tribal Council, Clarence reflected on his time spent in Africa, adding, "I'm glad I didn't do anything at any time to dishonor myself or my mother. I played a fair game and I lost. I lost because I was strong, and there aren't many people who can say they lost because they were strong."
Brandon Sheds Allegiances
After Tribal Council on night 18, tensions ran rampant in the Samburu tribe as they thought about what was to come. Reflecting on the Tribal Council vote that extinguished Lindsey Richter's torch, Brandon shed his allegiances when he announced, "Lindsey left Tribal Council looking like a jack-ass." He then went on to explain how glad he was that Lindsey was gone. Brandon's change of heart was just a reminder that, as Kim put it, "This is a selfish game!" With Lindsey's expulsion, Brandon and Kim were in an extremely precarious position. "They're as nervous as a whore in church," said Tom the goat farmer. Meanwhile, Brandon took no chances forming any further allegiances, revealing that he was even distancing himself from his comrade Kim. Brandon was sure either he or Kim was going soon; he just didn't want it to be him.
An Embarrassing Way to Die
At the Boran camp, Clarence awoke to deal with the gastronomic price of the chicken dinner he had had the night before. Though it was the best meal he'd had in 3 weeks, his body wasn't used to the fatty, rich food. After "doing his business" he stood up, only to discover a family of elephants just behind him. After having let his guard down in the presence of such large animals, Clarence admitted that being trampled, especially while doing what he had been doing, would be "a very embarrassing way to die."
Brunch, Anyone?
Anxiety was high as both tribes prepared for a possible merge. In addition, everyone became increasingly irritable as they wondered when the merge would come, if it would come at all. Sharing a mid-morning helping of rice, retired teacher Kim Johnson of the Boran tribe tried to rein in her surprise when she learned that "Frank has never heard the term 'brunch' before!" As Frank struggled with the concept of "brunch" ("It's a combination of breakfast and lunch?"), the rest of the tribe did their best to enjoy the morning gruel. Kim later added, "Frank knows a lot of things, and I can't believe he has never heard that term before."
The Merge
After receiving tree mail on the morning of day 20, both tribes met host Jeff Probst at the Immunity Challenge, where he informed the group that they were now one tribe. As Jeff handed each person a new green buff, the group reacted with cheers, ready to do battle as individuals. The long-awaited Merge had finally arrived. The new tribe then decided to set up their home at the Boran camp, and prepared for the first challenge. It was now every man and woman for him or herself.
Immunity Challenge: When It Rains It Really Pours
In a challenge that tested both physical endurance and mental stamina, the Survivors were forced, for the first time, to compete as individuals and not as tribemates. The winner would be immune from receiving any votes against them. In this challenge, each Survivor's wrists were attached to a rope connected to a bucket of water overhead. Their arms had to remain above their heads, very still, because the slightest movement would upset the bucket above and shower the person with water, thus eliminating that person from the game. Kelly was the first to lower her arm, and was disqualified after 14 minutes into the challenge. Kim Johnson was soon to follow. Sitting over to the side, the two women wasted no time filling each other in on the tribal politics that existed in each of their former tribes. Five hours later it was only Clarence and Teresa left--literally hanging. At Clarence's suggestion, the two settled the exhausting showdown for immunity by playing a simple game of "Rock, Paper, Scissors." Teresa won, and Clarence conceded, keeping true to his word by dousing himself with the bucket of water. Winning Immunity, Teresa would go to Tribal Council knowing she was safe for at least another three days.
The New Camp as One
On the trek back to camp, Frank reflected on his alienation from the group, saying, "Imagine getting in the mail an invitation to attend the Wagner family reunion and your name is Smith. That's just what it felt like. I'm just floating on the outside."
Back at camp, the group found themselves enjoying a surprise feast of cheese, crackers, fruit and wine. As the wine flowed, inhibitions relaxed. Drinking games ensued, and Tom confessed his attraction to Teresa. Full of charm, he announced that he didn't "care if Teresa had one eye on her forehead, I'd still take her!"
Moto Maji is Born
While sitting around the fire at night, Lex urged the group to adopt a new tribe name. After deliberating on several different choices, they chose "Moto Maji," the Swahili words for "fire" and "water," the two most important components for survival. The only problem was that no one could remember the correct way to pronounce it!
Talk to the Animals
While gathering firewood, Frank found himself in a meditative moment with a nearby elephant. Intrigued, and mimicking the elephant's movements by swaying his arm back and forth, Frank attempted to communicate with the animal. Later, Frank admitted, "There are a few humans here I wouldn't interact with, but the animals, yes."
Lex Informs Clarence
Taking advantage of the chaos within the newly merged tribe, Lex quickly moved to oust Clarence from the game. To succeed, however, he needed the majority of the tribe's votes. He found support quite easily with Tom, who at the same time conspired with Clarence against Brandon. Clarence's physical strength in the new individual Immunity Challenges forced Lex to take action. Attempting to ease the pain of a surprise vote, Lex took Clarence aside and informed him that he would be voted out. "You're too much of a threat," Lex told him. Feeling that Lex's actions were questionable, Kelly stated, "I like Clarence. He's really grown on me. He noticed he was rubbing people the wrong way and changed his ways. I think he's funny and part of the group, unlike crazy outcast Frank." In a last-ditch effort to save himself, Clarence attempted to sway Tom to vote along old Boran tribal lines. Agreeing with Clarence, Tom confessed, "I'm gonna be honest with you; I am ashamed to vote off anyone but Brandon at this next venture."
As the tribe prepared for their walk to Tribal Council, Teresa declared that she would honor the agreement she made with Clarence during the Immunity Challenge by saying, "I won't vote for Clarence tonight. He honored his word, and I have to do the same." But in the end, Clarence was the seventh person voted out of SURVIVOR AFRICA, but not before two votes, one from Clarence and one from Teresa, were cast against an unsuspecting Lex Van Den Berghe.
