414: FIRE AND WATER

Missions:
18: Walk Across Fire

My comments:
It is sad to know that it is almost over but the group has become a more tightly joined by all that they had to do.
It was great idea to break the boards because it allowed the group to realize that if they just think that they can they will accomplish anything that they try.
I think that I would have to agree with Erica about the reward not being totally exciting, seeing that I am close to her age I would not want to take time out when I am this close to finishing it.

Segment #1
Mission 18 - Walk on fire
The group is told that the fire walk mission means something more significant. Before they must walk on fire, they go to a pep talk/workshop. The instructor tells them to write a goal on a wooden board and then they have to karate chop the board in two with their hands. They all do it. Jake says he did it without trying.
Then the instructor talks to them about the actual fire walk. He says the worst that can happen is that they will end up with charred, bloody stumps for feet. But the best thing that can happen is that they'll do something most people their age will never get a chance to do.
He tells them that the fire they will walk over can get up to temperatures of 1,200 to 2,000 degrees. But he says the best thing to do when walking over the fire is to chant the words: "Cool moss" over and over again.
They are all pumped up and ready to complete their final mission. They scream and jump up and down. They notice that at the end of the fire there's a box wrapped in yellow paper with a big ribbon around it. It's the clue to their reward when they finish this mission.
Erika goes first, while repeating "cool moss" again and again. She does it! Then Oscar is next. Instead of chanting "cool moss" he says "Puerto Rico" over and over. He finishes! Next is Kalle. After she does it, they dump water on her feet to cool them off.
Then Jake does it. He says that he's changed so much since the first day they all met each other. Last is Vince, who warms his hands against the coals to see how hot they are. He says he's really scared, but he does it anyway.
At the end they all hug. Vince says it's sad this is the end of all their missions, but that it is rewarding.
Mission 18 completed.
They open the box. In it is an envelope from Trump Plaza, where they are told they will be staying for the night. They all scream and jump up and down. A limo picks them up to take them to the hotel. They are all crying in the limo. They still don't know exactly what their reward is.
Segment #2
That night, the limo drives them to the Trump Plaza. They get their room, which turns out to be a huge suite with five rooms, so they each get their own room. Each of their rooms, has the plastic bags of the stuff (money and credit cards) they were told to give up at the first mission. They also see that a video tape has been left for them to watch to see what their reward is for completing all the missions.
The video taps plays and shows them images of people at sea. Their handsome reward is that they each have a free ride to attend the Semester at Sea program. Any time in the next three years, they can go to Semester at Sea with free tuition and board.
Oscar is crying. He says it's like a dream come true for him to be able to travel. Erika doesn't seem to happy about the prize. She says she doesn't want to do it because she doesn't want to leave her family again like she did with Road Rules. She's crying, and says she feels like she's so behind everyone else and that she feels old around people.
At their last dinner together, everyone looks sad. Kalle says it's going to be hard to leave everyone. Oscar says that their next big mission is real life. Kalle says she thought she'd have a big ego after doing this and she doesn't. Oscar says he lost a lot of his ego because of this trip, and now he feels real.
They get served a gourmet dinner. Oscar makes a toast and thanks everyone for being his friend. Kalle says the dinner was like a huge whirlwind of the last 10 weeks.
At dinner, they get their last clue. with plane tickets home, which says "Tomorrow is goodbye. Your limo will pick you up promptly at 9 a.m. Bon voyage."
Segment #3
The next morning, images of everyone still asleep. Jake and Kalle are asleep in one bed together. They all wake up, pack and leave for the airport together in the limo. They all look sad and tired on the ride to the JFK airport. They say goodbye to Oscar first, who will be going home to San Juan. Oscar's crying as he boards his plane. They're all crying and waving goodbye.
Kalle says there were so many times on the trip that she couldn't stand Oscar for one more second, but the moment he got on his plane, she missed him.
Vince is next. He tells them that his dog is going to freak out when he sees him. He says that he can live his own life now. Erika says it's hard to see him go because he made her happy on the trip. When they say goodbye to Vince, he makes Jake kiss him on the cheek. Group hug. Vince boards his plane.
Erika is next to leave. Kalle tells her that she doesn't want to have to go home and deal with having to pack up and move to New York. She asks Erika if she's glad she moved to San Diego. Erika says she doesn't regret it one moment. Kalle says that she feels better about moving now, especially since Erika believes in her so much.
Erika says it'll be weird to wake up in the morning and not have them there. Erika boards her plane.
Jake says he doesn't want to say goodbye to Kalle. Kalle tells him to have faith. Jake's scared that they only have this trip in common. She tells him that she cares about him so much that she'll always make space for him in her life.
Jake tells her that he loves her. He says she's his best friend. They hug. She boards her plane. Jake says "Goodbye, Kalle" to the actual camera.

What MTV had to say about the episode:

414: FIRE AND WATER

The last mission is a doozy: walk over hot coals... barefoot!! After a short training session the kids make their painful jog with ease! At the end of the fire walk the crew is given a last night together in luxurious Trump Tower. After a feast they find out about their handsome reward: a semester at sea! Erika begins to cry... she just wants to go home. The next day, some dry eyed and some teary eyed, the Road Rules Islands cast part ways to pursue their futures... a little wiser and a little older, and with a bundle of Island Memories.
