 Flying Like An Eagle

405: FEAR OF HEIGHTS

Missions:
4: Wing Walking

My comments:
Oscar is finally starting to come out of his shell, and starting to tell the group what he feels about things.
Kalle will never be able to forget this, the look on her face was priceless.

What Bonnie had to say about the episode:

Original Air Date: August 4, 1997
Segment #1
Kalle is seen writing in a journal. She says she's the kind of person who goes for anything.
They all catch a flight to Miami, Florida where they pick up their new Winnie which looks suspiciously like the old one with the same ornaments inside.
On the drive to the Key West airport where their next mission will take place, Kalle and Erika talk about growing up in a divorced home. While Kalle was extremely young when her parents divorced, Erika was 11. Erika says Kalle is on the verge of starting her life away from home.
The group has travelled 3,079 miles so far.
The next morning at the Key Wesy International Airport, they meet a girl named Jesse and an older guy named Frank who will be training them for their next mission which happens to be trick flying a plane and wing walking.
Mission 4: Wing-Walking
Jesse tells them there will be a training competition to see who will be allowed to wing-walk and the rest will learn to do trick flying as pilots. She tells the group that the plane can go 170 to 180 miles an hour and that they will be working without parachutes. She says, as wing-walkers, once the plane is in the air, they will have to crawl on the wing and strap on a safety harness and then climb down in the seat again before the plane lands.
Segment #2
Jake and Vince are choosen to be trick pilots. Oscar wants to try and be a wind-walker. Erika volunteers to be a pilot, while Kalle wants to wind-walk.
As trick pilots, Erika, Jake and Vince learn they will be doing a loop, roll and barrel roll tricks. They each get in the cockpit and train with Frank who shows them how to handle the stick shift which will maneuver the small plane.
Jesse tells Oscar and Kalle that they will know when to go up on the wing by hand signals from the pilot. During the training, Oscar and Kalle compete for the wind-walker position by seeing who can get from the cockpit seat to the wing the fastest and easiest.
Vince is the first to go up in the sky. He has to do a perfect loop. He says he's nervous that he'll throw up in the plane.
At 170 miles an hour in the sky, Vince executes a perfect loop.
Now Oscar and Kalle are training with the propellor on, but with the plane still on the ground.
Oscar says it's not easy because the wind from the propeller is blowing hard and it's very stressful. Kalle's next and she seems to do it quicker.
Erika's next to fly the plane. When they go up in the air, she screams a lot, but remains all smiles. She'll be doing a barrel roll trick. She does it perfectly.
Jake is next to pilot the plane. He's scared out of his head. He does a roll trick. Jake says he can't imagine what it'll be like for Kalle and Oscar to wing walk.
Segment #3
They have to come back to the airport tomorrow for Oscar and Kalle to find out who gets to wing walk.
Kalle tells Erika she wishes she had a passion in life like the rest of them. Kalle and Jake sleep on top of the roof of the Winnie, while everyone else is inside. She talks about her boyfriend she left in Fort Collins. Jake confesses that he has a crush on her.
On the way to the airport, Vince asks them (jokingly) what happens if one of them passes out on the wing.
They find out when they get there that Kalle will be wing walking, but Oscar will still go up in the plane and get to stand up and wave.
    Kalle's excited, Oscar's nervous.
Oscar goes up first. He says he'll use the fear as a positive thing. He goes up and stands and waves. The rest of the group, down on the ground, screams up and waves back.
Kalle says she knows she won't fall, but she's still nervous. She says you only live once and you should not do things because you're afraid to do them.
Jake tells Erika he has feelings for Kalle.
The pilot tells Kalle, whatever she does, do not look down.
She successfully gets on top of the wing and is strapped in. She screams a lot and waves one hand at a time. The plane loops and tools with her on the wing.
She gets down off the wing (with it still in the air) and is back in the seat of the plane.
Vince says he'd give a lot of money to do what Kalle just did. Kalle says she'll have those feelings for the rest of her life. She says it's the best thing she's ever done in her whole life.
Mission 4 completed.

What MTV had to say about the episode:

405: FEAR OF HEIGHTS

Previously: The gang succeeds at their comedy mission and even manages to score some prize money for their efforts. The next clue tells them to pick up a new Winnie in Miami. But they are also forewarned to "be afraid, be very afraid." Doh!
Our heroes fly to Miami and find their new home on wheels. But alas, no horns this time! They head to Key West, and during the drive Kalle and Erika have a heart to heart about what it was like going through their parents' divorces.
Mission #4 is "wing-walking," which means standing on top of a plane while it's flying all over the place. Gulp. Only one person will qualify to do this daredevil feat, while the other folks will train to do loops and rolls in a snazzy red plane. Oscar and Kalle are chosen to train for the wing walk, and after a serious competition, Kalle wins out (though Oscar does get to stand up in the cockpit and wave to everybody back on the ground).
Kalle does amazingly on her wing walk, and returns to earth to gush about how it was the best thing she's ever done. Kalle and Oscar aren't the only ones who get to fly! Vince takes the cockpit and executes a perfect loop (rosary in pocket for good luck), Erika rocks out on a barrel roll, and Jake successfully completes a crazy move that's a combination of both the loop and the roll!
Meanwhile, on a more interpersonal front, Kalle and Jake lie awfully close to one another while sleeping on the Winnie's roof under a full moon. In the morning they hang out and talk about life. Later, Jake explains that he's got a major crush on her. Kalle knows this, he says, but she's not sure how to handle stuff because of her boyfriend back home, Brian.
Next time, with no money but lots of spunk, the Road Rulers are ordered to produce a swimsuit calendar. Bet you can't guess who's modeling...
